Stump

Stump is a round shaped coffee table. The table top has a gentle curve, which corresponds with a slight sunken on one of the table legs. Each leg was made by two curly cherry boards, the table top made by four boards. And I went through a thorough selection to see whether the grain would be cohesive. Such as which side should be shown outside, or which end would go up. They all become a part of the selection. Personally, I see the wood grain as a pattern. Organizing each board has become an interesting puzzle game to me. The shape of the coffee table is to imitate a stump outdoors, and my goal is to bring the natural scene indoors as if the tree is replant. A process of lumber is reshaped Into a tree’s stump. People who use it could naturally recall the memory of a tree. There are many ways to interact with it and no specific identification of its function. It could be used as a coffee table, but also as a stool or maybe a toy where little kids could pass underneath.
