Weaving Veneer Cabinet
This trapezoid-shaped cabinet, uniquely adorned with textiles covering three sides, is carefully crafted by hand. Its overall design draws inspiration from mid-20th-century vintage cabinets. The key feature of this cabinet is the innovative use of textile. It’s made of walnut veneer and cotton threads, aiming to seamlessly integrate wood and fabric. Compared to traditional upholstery that conceals the wood frame, here, both materials emerge together, creating an uncommon tactile experience. Weaving veneer into textile is a unique technique that machines are not capable of doing. And veneer has its own grain which will only be seen at a close distance. The eye follows its grain all around the cabinet, building a consistent sense of viewing and a surprise when walking close to it. Each wooden board undergoes a meticulous selection process based on its grain and color. The top board features the lightest grain, while the bottom boards exhibit darker grain. Similarly, the first piece of textile has the largest use of yellow threads and the last piece uses the most brown threads to create a gradient from light to dark.
